The Chaplains Association of Ohio recently hosted a powerful retreat seminar, “Spiritual & Emotional Dimensions of Pain,” led by renowned hospice chaplain and founder of the Sacred Art of Living Center, Richard Groves. The full seminar, now available in two parts, offered a deep dive into the classical Ars Moriendi (the art of living and dying) tradition, equipping caregivers with a hands-on approach to existential suffering.
The day began by introducing a clinically validated Spiritual Health Assessment Tool, providing a practical framework for chaplains to evaluate and address a patient’s inner state. Groves emphasized that by moving past the fear and denial of suffering, we can unlock profound avenues for healing.
The core of the seminar explored four critical paths to transform pain:
- Healing through Meaning: Guiding patients in their essential search for purpose amid crisis.
- Healing through Forgiveness: Highlighting the crucial role of reconciliation in achieving peace of mind.
- Healing through Relatedness: Demonstrating how human connection and community are vital resources for comfort.
- Healing through Hope: Focusing on cultivating a realistic and enduring sense of hope in the face of mortality.
The Retreat is in two parts.
