Trauma is a penetrating inner injury that affects an individual’s body, mind, and spirit. “It is not what happens to a person, but what happens inside a person” (Mate’ 2022, 20). Loss and grief underlie every trauma and it’s essential to take a holistic approach to promote healing from it (Shelvock 2025, 1, 4). Chaplains who are prepared to provide a safe climate in which individuals feel accepted and heard can greatly impact the growth and healing journey of a person suffering from trauma.
Participants will be able to:
- Define trauma as an inner injury to body, mind, and spirit
- Describe the key components of trauma
- Describe the signs and symptoms of trauma
- Identify and describe the deep impacts of severe trauma
- Integrate trauma-informed practices into spiritual care
- Describe specific ways in which chaplains can promote healing from trauma and encourage post-traumatic growth
